The sleepy students averaged less than eight hours of sleep a night, while research indicates teens need nine. Sizeable numbers of teens also reported drowsiness dragging down their grades, school attendance and social lives. Sleepy Teen Troubles   The National Sleep Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public understanding of sleep and sleep disorders, issued a report urging educators to adopt later start times for middle and high schools so teens can get more sleep in the morning.
