FOCUS - Close or narrow attention; concentration

Where do I want to be in 5 years?
How can I reach my long-term goals?
How do I stay on course?

Do you have a clear picture of where you're going and how you're going to get there? Have you bought a planner and never used it? Do you feel busy but still don't feel you're getting things done? A common denominator for all successful people is their ability to focus long-term or put first things first.

The FOCUS section will take you on a "journey" to discover your ideal destination and path to get there quickly. You will develop new concepts on the relationships between vision and academic performance. Creative and fun exercises and illustrations will help you create goals and plans to achieve your long-term vision. Innovative sections include goal setting versus problem solving and self-evaluation of your procrastination quotient. FOCUS will launch you into the 5% of people who are high achievers because they live out their written goals.

PLAN - A program or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment of an objective

How can I possibly get done all that I need to do today?
How can I prioritize my many commitments, assignments and relationships?
Will I have ANY free time if I plan?

Many planners are organized around a monthly or daily calendar and a task list. Planning often consists of many "Don't forget to show ups" on a calendar and "To do's" on a checklist. Others don't plan at all because they think effective planning requires organization to the point of scheduling bathroom breaks and breathing. The Success4Students program introduces the "Plan weekly not weakly" concept that incorporates FOCUS on long-term vision and semester goals. A printable weekly student calendar is used to demonstrate a clear method for scheduling academic, social, physical, mental and spiritual goals that promotes flexibility and yes, free time!

LEARN - to gain knowledge, comprehension or mastery through experience or study

Why do I procrastinate and how can I overcome it?
How do I determine what is really important in class?
How can I maximize my class time and study time?
Are there any skills that can reduce my study time and increase my retention?

Our LEARN section is divided into Study Strategies which emphasize effectiveness and Study Skills which emphasize efficiency and are the practical "nuts and bolts" of learning.

Study Strategies

This part of the seminar contains valuable insight into achieving academic success. No gimmicks here. The principles taught and practiced during this time will go a long way into making your college experience meaningful and rewarding. Maximizing in-class learning and using time efficiently during the day will save countless hours of "lost" time and prevent those all-night study sessions. These principles are timeless and make good sense. You may know a few, but you'll be motivated to use them daily.

Study Skills

Speed Reading/Learning
The average college student reads between 100-150 words per minute That is just a little faster than the speed at which we talk. With modest effort a student can increase this to 500 words per minute and gain more comprehension. If you're reading 2 hours per night this would reduce the time to about 40 minutes! Effective reading is measured not by how fast we read, but by the rate of comprehension and the amount we retain. Also, research shows that 70% of what you learn is through reading. Some alumni of our course say this section alone pays for the seminar. Time spent reading will constitute a good percentage of time spent studying, wouldn't you like to be more effective?

Memory Techniques and Note-taking
Most people feel they have a poor memory and absolutely hate note taking. We plan to change that! This is one of the more creative and fun parts of the course. Can you remember the name of that person you just met? Do you cram for a test and find that at test time, you've forgotten it all? There are many memory technique books on the market and any day you could hear an advertisement for a memory program on the radio. We have evaluated and explored the validity of these programs, and teach the basics of all memory systems. We'll give you some creative note taking examples such as Radiant Notessm and GRAB notessm to adapt to your own experience and style. In total, the information shared will give you two more weapons in your academic arsenal.

SUCCEED - to accomplish something desired or intended

Success has a different meaning to each person. But SUCCESS by almost any measure is achieving something you have set out to accomplish. Success4Students facilitates this by first, getting students to set goals, and second, by equipping students with the skills they need to achieve those goals.

In this section we encourage balance in each area of a student's life, prompting a Cycle of SUCCESS. Students complete the course motivated to start fresh, get a jump-start on their studies, or make a 180-degree turn to SUCCEED.
